A PRAGMATIC LOOK AT AI & WORDPRESS

The Real Business ROI of AI in WordPress: Why 25+ Years in Web Dev Taught Me to Skip the MCP Hype (For Now)

Managing 350+ WordPress sites, building custom bridge plugins, and testing Model Context Protocol in VS Code. Here is where AI actually speeds up web development—and where it just wastes your time.

⚡ Key Takeaways for Agency Owners & Developers

  • MCP is a scalability nightmare for site management: Configuring direct Model Context Protocol connections across dozens or hundreds of individual client sites takes vastly more time than using a central web dashboard like MainWP.
  • AI is unmatched for asset creation: Prompting an LLM to generate modern Elementor Flexbox JSON or helper function code saves hours of manual styling.
  • Context is everything: Generic 1-sentence prompts give generic results. Understanding the underlying technology (like flexbox, hooks, and REST APIs) is mandatory to guide AI effectively.

From Hand-Coding in ’97 to Managing 350+ Sites

I started building websites back in 1997 using nothing but Windows Notepad and Microsoft FrontPage. Fast forward through almost 30 years of technological shifts, and today I run an agency supporting 175 direct client websites, while serving as level-two technical support, server admin, and infrastructure maintenance for another 175 to 200+ partner agency sites.

Over those decades, I’ve managed multi-site fleets using virtually every dashboard tool that has existed: InfiniteWP, WP Remote, GoDaddy’s ProSites/The Hub, MySites.guru, and eventually settling on MainWP as our core operations hub.

In the past two years, AI has completely reshaped how I work. I regularly use LLMs to help me write custom WordPress plugins—like building a custom integration that bridges Fluent Support tickets directly into my MainWP dashboard while keeping the support database isolated for performance and security. I’m far from an AI skeptic. But when the industry started pushing Model Context Protocol (MCP) as the next must-have tool for WordPress management, I had to test the practical business reality.

Testing the MCP Hype: The 15-Minute Setup vs. 5-Second Click

If you follow web development news, you’ve likely seen webinars showcasing MCP connectors for Elementor, Gravity Forms, and MainWP. The promise sounds futuristic: open your code editor (like VS Code with Cline or Cursor), type a prompt, and let AI execute actions on your websites in real-time.

So, I set up an environment on my MainWP test server to evaluate it. Getting the MCP connector operational required configuring local VS Code settings, setting up OpenRouter API bridges, generating WordPress Application Passwords, and navigating security hurdles (like Wordfence silently blocking REST requests without clear error messaging). Getting one connection working smoothly took about 15 minutes of troubleshooting.

Then came the ROI calculation: How does this scale when managing 175 to 350 sites?

The answer is simple: It doesn’t.

Setting up 175 individual site connections, API tokens, and local configuration files in VS Code adds massive operational friction. Opening an application on my desktop, waiting for an LLM agent to parse system prompts, sending API payload requests, and verifying the execution takes significantly longer than simply clicking a button in a browser tab I already have open in MainWP.

Where AI Actually Delivers Massive ROI

Recognizing the limits of MCP doesn’t mean ignoring AI. The real value of AI in WordPress development isn’t in replacing simple point-and-click administrative tasks—it is in generating complex structured assets and custom code.

Recently, I needed to modernize an HOA website’s contact directory page. Originally, it was a plain block of text with phone numbers and headings. Building a responsive, modern card layout manually in Elementor would have taken about 15 minutes of dragging containers, setting padding, adjusting colors, and tweaking flexbox alignments.

Instead, I dropped the raw text into an LLM and prompted it: “Convert this structured contact list into an Elementor Flexbox Container JSON format using styled background cards and clean division.”

Within 30 seconds, it produced a clean JSON payload. I imported it straight into Elementor, tweaked a few default styling parameters, and was done. That is where AI shines: eliminating tedious layout construction while keeping control in your hands.

The Prompting Myth: Why Technical Expertise Still Wins

There is a widespread misconception that AI allows anyone to put a single generic sentence into a prompt box and magically produce production-ready websites. The reality is that AI output is only as good as the domain knowledge driving the prompt.

When I prompt AI for Elementor layouts, I explicitly instruct it to use Flexbox Containers (v3 architecture), manage specific HTML semantics, and handle nested structures cleanly. When I use AI to help draft plugin code, I know exactly what WordPress hooks, sanitization functions, and database structures are required.

Without that underlying technical foundation, AI-generated code and layouts quickly become bloated, insecure, or unusable. AI doesn’t replace 25+ years of web development experience; it makes it more efficient.
